Our team has worked on issues related to the economy and the environment since calls for sustainable development emerged in the late 1980s. We've worked for governments, multilateral institutions, civil society and business in Canada and around the world. We offer a depth of experience that is difficult to match.

Our team

Rob Smith

Principal

Rob is an experienced consultant with an international reputation as an environment-economy expert. He has a broad knowledge of the science, policy and economics related to natural capital, climate change, natural resources, ecosystems, wastes, environmental technologies and environmental expenditures. In addition, he has deep knowledge of official statistics, including the national accounts. He is especially known for his work developing and promoting the concept of natural capital and its use as a basis for measuring sustainable development. Rob is fluent in English and French.

Kieran McDougal

Associate

Kieran is a talented ecological economist with a special interest in governance issues. His recent consulting projects have included the valuation of forest ecosystem goods and services in Ethiopia, the measurement of inclusive wealth in Canada, with a focus on human and natural capital, and Canada-United States cross-border renewable energy governance. In 2013, he spent several months in Botswana working on the Maun Riverfront Development Project, where he engaged community members in the development of the Maun Museum as a cultural hub. Kieran is fluent in English and has a working knowledge of French.

Michael Bordt

Associate

Michael is a well-known environmental statistician and analyst with a 35-year history of work at Statistics Canada, the OECD and as a consultant to the World Bank and United Nations. A talented researcher, analyst and writer, Michael is one of the world's foremost experts in ecosystem accounting. His consulting work has included development of diagnostic tool to assist countries interested in developing environmental accounts, training on ecosystem accounts and development of Indonesia's environmental statistics program. Michael is fluent in English and bahasa Indonesia with a good knowledge of French.

Yvan Gervais

Associate

Yvan is an experienced statistician and analyst with a career spanning more than 30 years in economic, social and environmental statistics. His areas of expertise include econometrics, time-series analysis, data visualization and reporting. He speaks French and English fluently.

Associate

Christian is an experienced statistician, analyst and manager, having spent more than 25 years with Statistics Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. His expertise includes statistical methodology, economic, social and health statistics and economic analysis. Christian speaks French and English fluently and has a working knowledge of Spanish.

Jessica Metuzals

Associate

Jessica is a master's candidate in Environmental Science at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada where she is studying the environmental impacts of uranium mining in Baker Lake, Nunavut. Her research has focused on alternative sources of nitrogen in agricultural systems, the risks and benefits of solid waste incineration and the value of non-timber forest products in Ethiopia. She is a skilled researcher and writer who tackles projects with enthusiasm and independence. Jessica is fluent in English and French.
