Project
Towards an in-depth study of Canada’s Energy Wealth – Scoping Study
Client
Energy Policy Branch Natural Resources Canada
Objective
The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) created this report at the request of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to look at energy resource development in Canada through the lens of "comprehensive wealth". The results of the study provided valuable information to ensure that policies on Canada's energy resources stay consistent, allowing energy resources to continue to contribute to the prosperity of the country as they had been up until the point of the study's creation. Assessing Canada's income (GDP) as the sole indicator for the value of the country's energy resources prevents the nation from seeing the big picture and removes the ability to assess the prosperity of the energy sector over the long term. This report aimed to show that energy wealth, rather than GDP, is a better indictor for measuring the success of the energy resource sector in Canada by not only looking at the present but being able to look at future prosperity.
