Pilot Land Cover and Forest Asset Natural Capital Accounts for Ontario

Objective
Our report focused on developing an NCA framework for Ontario to assist policy makers and resource managers. Consistent, comparable and comprehensive statistics allow policy makers to assess the costs and benefits of resource use or land use change. The main objectives of the project were to:
- explore the development of NCA by establishing the following pilot accounts based on existing MNRF and Statistics Canada data and consistent with the SEEA-CF international methodology:
- Land Account
- Physical Forest Asset Account
- Monetary Forest Asset Account
- establish an information management plan that covers where and how to house the accounts and associated data
- demonstrate the utility of the NCA by constructing and reporting on selected sustainability indicators developed using the accounts
Our Role
Midsummer Analytics, in collaboration with Anielski Management and Green Analytics, prepared this report for the Strategic and Aboriginal Policy Branch of the Ontario MNRF. The report provided expert advice on the use of national capital accounting to further sustainable development in the Ontario MNRF by facilitating environmental information integrated within a comprehensive and coherent NCA framework.
